The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) is the apex governing body dedicated to promoting and developing Para Sport in the country. PCI is affiliated with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and recognised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS), Government of India, as a National Sports Federation. Our mission is to identify, train, and support athletes across the country, nurturing a dynamic Paralympic movement and ensuring strong representation in both national and international sports events.

With affiliations spanning 26 State Associations, 8 Individual Para Sports Federations, and 6 National Sports Federations, PCI is committed to the holistic development of Para Sports. We play a crucial role in selecting and preparing Indian teams for the Paralympic Games and other prestigious international competitions, achieving remarkable successes such as the impressive medal tally of 8 medals at the Tokyo Paralympic Games 2020.

Aligned with the National Sports Code 2011, our constitution reflects our dedication to advancing sports in accordance with government guidelines. Funded by the Government of India and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, donations to PCI benefit from tax-exempt status, fostering broader support for our cause.

In collaboration with esteemed partners like the Indian Army and Indian Oil Corporation Limited, PCI is spearheading initiatives to further the growth of Para Sports. We Recently Hosted the New Delhi 2024 WSPS World Cup in March 2024 in India, showcasing our commitment to providing world-class opportunities for our athletes. With the unwavering support of the Sports Authority of India and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, PCI is empowering athletes with disabilities to excel and make their mark on the global stage.

Mission of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI)
The mission of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) is to promote and support para sports across the nation. This involves educating the public and professionals about para sports, providing guidance to differently-abled individuals and their families on how to become para-athletes, fostering pride and emphasising the importance of sports in their lives. Collectively, these efforts contribute to the growth and development of para sports and empower differently-abled individuals through sports.

Ensure that differently-abled athletes have equal access to sports facilities, training, and competitive opportunities. To create a sporting culture where differently-abled athletes are respected, supported, and celebrated for their achievements.

To identify, nurture, and develop the potential of differently-abled athletes from grassroots to elite levels and support the overall well-being of athletes, including their physical, mental, and emotional health.
3. Excellence in Para-Sports:
Enhance the performance of Indian para-athletes in national and international competitions, including the Paralympic Games. Thus, establishing India as a leading nation in the para-sports movement globally.
4. Awareness and Advocacy:
Increase public awareness about para-sports and the capabilities of differently-abled athletes and advocate for the rights and recognition of differently-abled athletes within the broader sporting community and society.

Our Story

2016

India has fielded its largest-ever delegation for the Summer Paralympic Games, with 19 competitors participating across 5 sports. The ongoing performance at the Games marks India's most successful showing in the event's history, having secured a total of 4 medals thus far – 2 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze. Notably, Devendra Jhajharia set a new world record with a throw of 63.37 meters, surpassing his own previous record of 62.15 meters, to win a gold medal. Mariyappan Thangavelu achieved India's first Paralympic gold medal in Rio with a remarkable jump of 1.89 meters in the Men's T42 event. Deepa Malik made history by securing second place in the Women's Shotput F53 event, setting a personal best with a throw of 4.61 meters, becoming India's first female and oldest athlete to win a Paralympic medal. Varun Singh Bhati clinched bronze in the Men's High Jump T-42 with a personal best jump of 1.86 meters. Overall, India's performance resulted in a 43rd place finish out of 83 nations.

The Paralympic Committee of India recently hosted the IWAS World Games, emphasizing the principles of unity, friendship, and sportsmanship. The event saw participation from 43 countries, with India securing the 2nd position in the medals tally. The games brought together 2100 elite athletes, 400 technical officials, and featured 250 gold medals, 200 silver medals, and 180 bronze medals. Furthermore, the event involved 300 momentums, and 500 volunteers including NCC/Scouts and Para-Army members, supported by 100 specially trained officials. This successful event underscored the organization's steadfast commitment to empowering and providing competitive opportunities to athletes with physical disabilities worldwide.

In 1994, Shri. M. Mahadeva and his associates established the Physically Handicapped Sports Federation of India, an organization dedicated to the advancement and support of sports for individuals with physical challenges at a national level. Concurrently, the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) was officially registered in the Registrar of Co-Operative Societies in Bangalore, Karnataka.

India Made Its Summer Paralympic Debut at the 1968 Summer Paralympic Games at Tel Aviv, Israel. The summer Paralympics was held from November 4 to 13, 1968. Ten Indian athletes competed, eight men and two women.
